Software Programmer -Variable Star Astronomy Membership Organization

The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) has begun a search for a programmer to help with infrastructure updates and software development.

The AAVSO is an international non-profit organization of variable star observers whose mission is to enable anyone, anywhere, to participate in scientific discovery through variable star astronomy. Its mission is accomplished through the observation and analysis of variable stars, through maintaining a database of variable star observations for access by the astronomical community, through forging strong relations between amateur and professional astronomers, and by promoting scientific research, education and public outreach using variable star data. The AAVSO’s online tools enable its observers to upload/download photometric data, analyze light curves, and plan their observations according to their capabilities. The AAVSO also curates an active database of more than 37 million data points collected by its international community. Therefore, the programmer’s function will be essential for the maintenance and long-term sustainability of our core infrastructure, ensuring a smooth function of our applications.

Examples of specific duties are: - Maintain AAVSO Django apps and improvements when needed - Design and develop new Django and Python web applications for AAVSO users and staff

- Assist in configuring and administrating AAVSO databases

 

Specific skills and experience required: - Knowledge of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySql, PHP)

- Experience with PHP and Python 2 & 3 programming - Good working knowledge of Django web programming framework - Front-end web development experience: HTML, CSS, Javascript - Strong communication skills

Desired skills include: - Experience with Drupal web

The starting date for the position is negotiable. The contract postion is for one year, with the possibility of renewals contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

A flexible work schedule and a 35-hour work week are included in the position.
