The purpose of this job is to develop publishing technologies, including annotation, XML typesetting and translation facilities, for the Open Library of Humanities (OLH) project, based in the School of Arts at Birkbeck.

The job holder is responsible for delivery of software systems required to fulfil the needs of the Open Library of Humanities.  This includes test-driven development of a triage mode for the meTypeset XML typesetting software; the integration of hypothes.is annotation software into the OLH platform; and the modification of the hypothesis client and server components into a fully fledged inter-lingual translation system.

The purpose of this development work is to situate the OLH platform as a world-class academic publication platform.

You will require extensive knowledge of computer programming, including in-depth knowledge of at least one specific programming language/technology in a Unix environment, with good working knowledge of distributed version systems and a good understanding of web accessibility and usability issues. You will also need at least three years’ experience of Web development within a Unix-like environment and experience of development in a Linux environment.

The ideal candidate will be a highly productive and motivated individual, proficient in a range of appropriate technologies and with a demonstrable track record at completing projects. Technological knowledge and ability should ideally include, but is not limited to: PHP, CSS, javascript, python, git, test-driven-development methodologies, XML, XHTML, XSLT, and XPATH. Above all you will need to be keen to work in a team to contribute to the achievement of our goals and aspirations but also have the ability to work independently. Knowledge of universities, the humanities disciplines and scholarly publishing would be an advantage.

Salary: Grade 8 of the College's London Pay Scale which is £42,446 rising to £49,964 per annum.

This post is full time, 35 hours per week (1.0 FTE) and fixed term for 26 months. The salary quoted above is on the College's London Pay Scale and includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area. The initial salary will be dependent on the skills and experience of the successful applicant. The appointment is subject to a probationary period of 6 months.
