I am a freelance web developer in Champaign, IL. As a contractor, I've worked with individuals, start-ups and consulting firms. My methodology is relatively the same across the board. Break the work down into small tasks. Identify which tasks are critical and which can wait. Implement those tasks and have them reviewed by the product owner/customer.
