Omni Digital Bristol, United Kingdom

Python Developer in Bristol

Join a team who are committed to the best work

Overview

Omni Digital is looking for a confident Python developer. The start date is flexible but the position is currently open.

The salary will be commensurate with experience, and will be pro-rata. The job offers the opportunity to work from home for one day per week.

About You

You will need to be able to work quickly and proficiently with Python, and experience with Django is preferable.

Experience in a broad range of programming languages and technologies is desirable, but not necessary.

An openness to new technologies, and a 'right tools for the job' approach is mandatory.

If you have experience in front-end technology this will be a bonus, but is not a requisite for the role, as we have a dedicated position filled for front-end and design. Plus, we do very little client-side development at all - an unfashionable position and one you would be welcome to question us on at your interview.

You will be committed to best practices and be able to work as part of a team. A passion for open source technology is essential, and ideally you will have experiencing in open-sourcing your own code.

Although generally you will not be dealing with clients on a day-to-day basis, we do ask that you are able to talk to clients when necessary.

You’ll also have your own interests that we’d like you to share with the team. Ideas for our days out, new business venture proposals (no matter what field or industry), improvements to our workflows, new tech talks, etc -  all welcome.

About Us

We are a mature company (16 years!) with an experienced dev team. We build products, systems and applications primarily in Python and using Django, but utilise other technologies such as Javascript, Node, and GoLang where appropriate. We believe in the right tools for the job, not one hammer for every problem.

Our infrastructure stack consists of modern tooling such as Ansible for the management of server configuration, with some ongoing experiments with Hashicorp Vault and Terraform.

We do primarily service clients, however our approach is to create open-source products that the clients’ work is built upon rather than treating every client project as a new job.

We have two of our own products under development, which we are looking to release to the market in the Summer. Our aim is to make our products become our primary source of income.

Our clients span public, private and charity sectors, and all expect the very best service from us. The NHS is an important client to us, and a recent project we worked on is: bnssgccg.nhs.uk.

For instance within the context of News & Media, we have produced NLP systems for the recognition of distinct entities, constructed highly concurrent web crawlers and have used machine learning to identify the quotes that journalists take down in interviews.

We are committed to only hiring the best people, and in return we offer a flexible working relationship, in a nice office environment, with the usual perks such as regular team away days.

We try not to fall into agency cliches, and we also try and avoid bullsh*t in all our work and our communications. Hence no ‘Ninja rockstar developer’ job titles.

Our team is efficient, but small. We take pride in our efficiency but are looking to grow sensibly. You will be a part of a team of four back-end developers, one front-end designer-developer, and one person who deals with the clients and runs the Agile sprints.

Omni operates on a primarily flat hierarchy, we do not have account managers, business development managers, traffic managers or any of the other trappings of the stereotypical Digital Agency. Decisions around technology are lead by the dev team, our direction is planned and executed by the team as a whole.

We are based in one of the most beautiful and historic areas of Bristol: the Underfall Yard. We all enjoy having the opportunity to walk along the water in our breaks and appreciate our surroundings.

As a business Omni is dedicated to ethical and sustainable practices and are in the final stages of qualifying for B Corps certification.

The Work Involved

The role will largely see you focused on back-end development in Python.

Specifically, the work will involve, but will not be not exclusive to:

  • Building systems in Python and Django
  • Integrating HTML flats prepared by our template designer / frontend developer
  • Testing - unit and function testing, as well as smoke tests and peer review
  • Any training for new or existing staff in back-end technologies
  • Research and development

Hours

You will be working 40 hours per week with paid lunch.

How to Apply

To apply, please email contact@omni-digital.co.uk with a ONE PAGE C.V.

Octopus Energy London, United Kingdom

Back-end developer

WANTED: thoughtful back-end developers to help build out our platform.

Octopus Energy is a tech-focused energy supplier for the UK market and we’re are looking for diligent and thoughtful software engineers, of any level of experience, to join our growing team.

We’re building a modern, event-driven platform for interacting with both consumers (via the web, mobile and smart-meters) and the industry (eg data flows, consumption forecasting, trading on the wholesale market).

We’re an innovative and customer-focussed company, helping to drag the energy industry into the 21st century.

This is a rare opportunity to use technology to help fight climate change through helping the UK to use green technology and renewable energy sources.

OUR TEAM

All technology is written and maintained by a multi-discipline engineering team of around ten people. This includes server-side, client-side and mobile engineers working closely with UX experts, copywriters and designers.

We follow a Kanban-like approach, using Google docs and Trello to specify and manage work; Github, CircleCI and Terraform Enterprise as part of an immutable-infrastructure, continuous delivery pipeline; and Loggly, Sentry and Cloudwatch to measure performance and monitor production.

Engineering standards are high. We pair program, thoroughly review and test code before it deploys and maintain fast, high-value test suites. We have weekly tech talks, monthly blitz-days (eg sharpening our internal tools, upgrading dependencies) and can often be found at tech meet-ups and conferences.

OUR TECHNOLOGY

On the server-side, we mainly use Python. Our consumer-facing site is powered by Django and the Django-REST-framework. We also use Pandas, Numpy and Jupyter for analysis and forecasting, plus Celery, RabbitMQ, SQS and Airflow for background processing.

We use AWS heavily, employing most of the “Hashistack” (eg Packer, Consul, Terraform) as part of a continuous deployment pipeline.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We’re looking for someone with a general interest in technology and problem-solving; someone diligent and thoughtful. It would be helpful to have experience/expertise in the following (in rough priority order):

  • Python
  • Django (or equiv. web framework)
  • Domain modelling
  • HTTP and REST APIs
  • Writing robust and fault-tolerant software
  • Celery and async processing
  • Postgres

Plus experience in the following would be a bonus:

  • AWS
  • Terraform, Packer, Consul
  • React and Redux

We would prefer someone who can work in our Soho office but will consider remote candidates (warning: the bar is much higher). You do need to be able to work in the UK without a VISA though.

Above all, we’re looking for someone who thrives on providing alternative opinions, challenging those around them and being challenged.

For more details, including some sample internal documents, see: https://octopus.energy/careers/back-end-developer/

Could this be you?

PrecisionHawk Raleigh, North Carolina

Full Stack Developer

Are you a Full Stack Software Developer who has prior experience working on a scalable, high-volume, web-based application? Do you have experience writing and shipping quality code with a modern web application framework (Django, Rails, etc.)? Do you have a clear understanding of HTTP and RESTful APIs? If you are looking for a place where your contributions will have a significant impact on the product this is an exciting opportunity to join the drone pilot network team supporting the https://droners.io/ platform!

We’re still a small, scrappy team that has joined forces with one of the largest drone companies in the world.  Backed by some of the most respected investors in the space, you’ll be working right along the founding team to scale literally 1000x in the next year. We first went to market with a small-business/consumer product.  We’ve dominated that space and are now building out our enterprise product to better serve insurance, utility, energy and construction and other enterprise verticals at massive scale. This role includes all the best things about joining an early stage startup and leaves out the worst – ramen noodles for lunch and no users to sell a product to.

How would you utilize your experience designing and developing web-based applications at PrecisionHawk? Here are a few examples of what you can expect to do and learn:

  • You will be a key member of the engineering team who will enable the continuous delivery of quality software
  • You will handle server-side and client-side code for a production platform
  • Solve problems as they arise as we scale up and grow our customer base

Our stack is Python, Django, Django Rest Framework, Celery, Elasticsearch and Memcached.  We are deployed on AWS, and we use Git (Github Flow) to manage code and JIRA for project management. We care less that you perfectly fit our technical requirements/stack, and more so that you are a passionate developer eager to learn as well as bring your experience building web applications to the team!  We are a close-knit team who truly enjoys working with each other and are very passionate about the success of the product.  As much as we care about the product – we equally care about our team members and support each other in any way we can. The team is lead by the original founder and creator of the company, who is also a software engineer.
