We've got a newspaper web team that wins national recognition, and a newsroom that buys into an online future. But we're a site running on ASP, with a design to match.
So now we're moving to Django, leaving our old site behind and relaunching from scratch. Our focus is intensely local; we want to give people in our community not just the news, but places to explore what they're passionate about. We're going to build something great, and then we're going to keep building great new things. And we want your help.
What you should have
- HTML/CSS/XML/Javascript background. You know the drill. We've got a great multimedia team, so editing and production skills aren't what we're looking for. We want a coder who likes to build the tools that the rest of our newsroom will use.
- Understanding of database development. Everything we do has a database underneath. We need someone with a strong, user-focused feel for the design and development of data projects.
- A record of solid web development. This developer will help us build http://spokesman.com from the ground up. We bought Ellington from the crew in Lawrence, so Python/Django experience is ideal. But if you've got a track record in Ruby or PHP and Django sounds interesting, let's talk.
- People skills. Our web team sits right in the newsroom, and the relationships we have with reporters, editors and photographers are crucial to our site's success. This developer will be working with all types of people, with all levels of comfort with technology.
If this is you, and you think clean code can be a platform for creative journalism, send your resume and links to Ryan Pitts at ryanp@spokesman.com.
