Commuter Feed is a cross-platform API application, that allows users to post traffic and transit reports primarily using the Twitter API. The site is owned and maintained by Zenji Web Development. Commuter Feed has been featured on WebWare, ReadWriteWeb, ChrisBrogan, Wired, Lifehacker, Daring Fireball and more.
Zenji is a tiny, agile web design and development business located in Los Angeles (though most of our contractors are hundreds of miles away), and run by Ron Whitman. Ron has worked on hundreds of web projects, including some large startups, as developer, tech lead, project manager, creative director, information architect etc. The site is currently being bootstrapped onto revenues and leftover time from client work. (PS: We also have other client projects involving CakePHP and AJAX)
We are planning some big things and looking for an additional remote Django developer to help out. The role is ongoing and hourly. We firmly believe in releasing early and often, and rely heavily on the engineering team to take pride in the code that they write.
Your Responsibilities:
-Develop a highly scalable cross-platform Django / PHP website, using Agile methods (few specs, frequent public testing and implementation).
-Write and ship great code that’s maintainable and efficient
-Work with other talented engineers and designers to deliver a high-quality product on time
-Develop Facebook, OpenSocial, mobile and other interfaces
Qualifications:
-3+ years of web programming experience, including Django, PHP, Apache and MySQL with a strong knowledge of the Python language
-Strong client-side skills with CSS, JavaScript, semantic XHTML, and AJAX are required
-Knowledge of XML, RSS, REST / CURL APIs, Twitter, OpenSocial, Facebook, Pownce, OpenID and other platforms
-Smart, driven to get things done, take pride in the quality of code that you write
-Motivated self-starter who can accurately set goals and deadlines — this is very important
-Proven experience and track record of web development on sites that consumers use; you know things like AJAX, JavaScript, performance tuning, etc. like the back of your hand
-Should be able to learn new languages and frameworks extremely fast
-Familiarity with programming on mobile devices and operating systems a plus
-Design-conscious; Don't need to be a designer, but can spot when something doesn't look good
-Excellent written communication skills. Be able to write and respond to email quickly, frequently and accurately
-Excitement to be part of a project with tremendous growth potential
-B.S. (equivalent, or in the process of achieving) degree in Computer Science or related Engineering
Compensation:
-We pay variable rates depending on experience. Yes, we're bootstrapping on a slim budget, however its a fun project and you will be compensated fairly.
